Board of Education's Role

The Platte Valley Board of Education is composed of five volunteer members. No single school board member has authority to make decision, act, etc. Decisions are made by the Board of Education. Effective school boards function as a cohesive unit made up of five individuals. The board has a number of official roles that individuals partake in to help make the whole board function as a single unit. These roles are set up at the organizational meeting and the process for that organizational meeting is spelled out in board Policy BDA. Acting together, the Board of Education's powers and responsibilities fall into the following categories (Policy BBA):

  • Legislative or policymaking
  • Educational planning and appraisal
  • Staffing and appraisal
  • Financial resources
  • School facilities
  • Communication with the public
  • Judicial

It is important that the candidate be sincerely and honestly interested in serving the whole school district for the best interests of all children. Board members shall be nonpartisan in dealing with school matters. The Board does not wish to subordinate the education of children and youth to any partisan principle, group interest or personal ambition (Policy BBBA).

Individuals seeking additional information may contact DEO's Suzi Johnson or Dr. Jeremy Burmeister at the Platte Valley Central Office at 970-336-8500.
