Board of Education's Role

The Platte Valley Board of Education consists of five volunteer members who work together as a unified team. No individual school board member has the authority to make decisions or take action on behalf of the district; all decisions are made collectively by the Board of Education.

An effective school board functions as a cohesive unit with each member contributing to the success of the whole. At the organizational meeting—outlined in Policy BDA—the board assigns official roles that help ensure smooth and collaborative governance. Acting together, the Board of Education's powers and responsibilities fall into the following categories (Policy BBA):

  • Legislative or policymaking
  • Educational planning and appraisal
  • Staffing and appraisal
  • Financial resources
  • School facilities
  • Communication with the public
  • Judicial

Board service requires a sincere and honest commitment to the best interests of all students across the district. Members are expected to remain nonpartisan in school matters and avoid subordinating education to any partisan principle, group interest, or personal ambition (Policy BBBA).
