Supporting Student Health, Safety, and Success

Platte Valley School District’s Health Services program is committed to supporting student wellness and academic success by working in partnership with families. Our school health staff promote healthy habits, monitor student well‑being, and help ensure a safe and supportive learning environment for all students. Through health education, screenings, and referrals, we encourage lifelong wellness while respecting the role of parents and guardians as the primary decision‑makers in their child’s care.

Student health records are maintained with the highest level of confidentiality and care. Our nursing staff securely manage health information and collaborate with authorized school personnel only when necessary to support a student’s learning or ensure safety. Health Services also coordinates required vision and hearing screenings, supports dental health initiatives, and follows state and federal guidelines to respond to communicable illnesses. Together, these services help keep students healthy, safe, and ready to learn each day.

When Students and Staff Should Stay Home

Platte Valley School District will work in conjunction with the Colorado Department of Education (CDE) and local public health authorities regarding communicable illness issues. Our general message is simple: If your son or daughter is healthy, we want them at school. If your child is ill and not feeling well, please keep them home.

Our practices will include the following:

  • Masks: Masks are not required. Any student, staff member, or visitor who chooses to wear a mask may do so. We ask that everyone remains respectful and considerate of individual health choices.
  • Contact tracing: The district will not conduct contact tracing.
  • Household exposure: Students who are not sick will not be excluded from school due to illness in the household. However, any student who is ill should remain home.
  • Fever and illness: If a student develops a temperature of 100.4°F or higher, they will be sent home. This aligns with longstanding district practice and supports student recovery while helping to prevent the spread of illness to others.
  • Health guidance: When determining whether a student should remain in school or be sent home, the district will refer to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) guidance titled "How Sick is too Sick?"
  • Communicable disease policy: The district will continue to follow Board of Education policy related to vaccinations, exemptions, and exclusions. This is including but not limited to tuberculosis, roseola, head lice, chickenpox. Please refer to Board Policy JLCC-E(1): Communicable Diseases for additional details.

Please note that these expectations may change in response to evolving public health conditions or updated state and local guidance.
