Storm Closures

Weather-Related School Closure Procedures

District personnel check roads around the district between 3:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. to determine whether school will be in session. A decision is made by 6:00 a.m. when the first buses depart district grounds. Road conditions can vary significantly across the district. For example, the north and south regions can be very different from each other as can north/south roads versus east/west roads.

If the decision is to hold school, no notifications will be sent to TV stations or posted online. Bus drivers are always instructed to take their time and be careful. Families are encouraged to use their best judgment regarding what is best for their children's safety. You may choose to keep your children home based on the conditions near your residence and your circumstances.

The District uses Edlio, a communication platform integrated with our website, as the primary method of notification in the event of a school closure. Edlio can send thousands of text messages and emails within minutes to the contact information listed in each child’s Alma record. Notifications will be sent to all primary and secondary phone numbers via text and to all email addresses on record. Additionally, it is recommended to download the Edlio app which allows families to manage notification settings.

It is the responsibility of parents/guardians to ensure phone numbers and email addresses are accurate in the student information system. You can verify and update your contact information with the school office staff or when attending parent-teacher conferences.

In addition to Edlio messaging, the district will post announcements on our social media pages, district website, and to news media with the following message:

“PLATTE VALLEY SCHOOL DISTRICT RE-7 IN KERSEY WILL BE CLOSED TODAY DUE TO (THE STORM) OR (ROAD CONDITIONS) OR (WEATHER AND ROAD CONDITIONS)”

We contact TV stations Channels 4, 7, 9, and 31, but please realize that there is more than one Platte Valley School District (or schools with Platte in the name) and we do not control how these stations display school closure messages.

We strive to make the best decisions possible with the information available. If school is canceled during the school day, the same notification procedures will be followed. Please have a family emergency plan in place and ensure your children understand that plan in case of a storm-related closure.
